She threateningly raised her hands in a karate chop position. He gazed fondly down at his wife-to-be, who stared rapturously up at him as well. Her hands were clasped happily, while Frankie looked on bemusedly.
He slipped off the comfortable headphones and powered down the machine, still affectionately thinking of his first encounter with Franny, the love of his life. Cornelius jumped a mile, almost breaking the Scanner for the second time in its existence. He turned, irritated, to face his son. He stood and placed the old, graying blanket over his prized invention, the one that started it all. The afternoon sun was almost literally dripping through the windows of the dome, casting light on the numerous gleaming contraptions. About thirty, in fact — all invented by Lewis Robinson, a boy of fourteen.
He barely heard his foster mother's calls to come eat. A pencil was tucked behind his ear, half hidden by a haystack of spiky blonde hair that would never lie flat, and another was in his hand as he drew madly on the next empty page of his notebook.

A shelf nearby stacked all the notebooks he had filled since he had moved in with Bud and Lucille, almost two hundred in total. A few moments later, Lewis dropped the pencil triumphantly and proudly tacked his newly finished plan for the first robot he would ever invent to the large blackboard.
He knew he could do it; in fact, he had already done it in the future.

But Carl would have to wait. He cast one last look at his inventions, then ran down the stairs. As usual, Lucille Robinson had twenty or more caffeine patches slapped onto her arm. She was busily stirring a large pot of spaghetti, a food she knew Lewis loved. Bud came walking in, the face drawn on the back of his head beaming its perpetual smile. Long before he had finished recounting how he planned to build the robot however, he was interrupted by a loud knock at the door.
While his son continued to cry into his shoulder, Cornelius placed his hand on his back and rubbed it with long, warm, comforting strokes.
Cornelius suddenly forgot that his son was a grown man, and he began talking to him as a mother would to a toddler. Cornelius murmured, "Shh…it's alright. It'll be alright, okay? It was at least fifteen minutes later when Wilbur calmed down enough to finally let go of his dad.
He gasped, "Dad…you got shot. How did you-I mean-How…? I can't remember anything. Wait…I kind of remembered being shot and all, but I don't remember my funeral, or anything. That's a good thing, right? I don't want to remember any crying. How did you come back to life?! Cornelius said, "Whoa…Where are we going? Wilbur looked behind him as he answered, "We're going to see the family. Everyone would want to see you!
If-If they saw me dead all those years ago. I-I just…" Cornelius' voice trailed away. Wilbur gently put his arms around his father and whispered, "I-I know you're scared. But think about mom. She missed you…a lot. You'll make them all happy. Jeff looked up at Cornelius and said, "I'm glad you're back Grandfather. Anna, Wilber's wife, was trying to talk to Franny, but Franny did what she did every night after Cornelius died.
She was holding a picture of Cornelius and tracing his face over and over with wistful eyes. Anna stopped talking and touched Franny's shoulder with a gentle hand. Franny ignored her and continued looking at the picture.
Jeff ran through the door yelling, "Mom!! As for what I did, I met a very special person. Franny gasped, then finally yelled, "A ghost!! I am so leaving now. Cornelius was afraid that she was going to do something to him, so he hid behind Wilbur, burying his face into Wilbur's right shoulder blade. Anna gently pushed Cornelius' shoulders so that Cornelius' face was completely removed from Wilburs' back. Anna looked at his face, then slowly pulled him into a hug.
Cornelius stayed frozen, until he finally wrapped his arms gently around her.
She whispered, "I-I don't know how you came back…but I'm so glad to see you. Cornelius ran behind Wilbur again. Wilbur looked at his dad.

P-Please don't hurt me. I-I just want to…to…" Cornelius looked up from Willburs' shoulder, "Do what? Cornelius wrapped his arms around her, and gave her a little kiss on the neck.
Cornelius whispered, "It's alright. They all hated me. Eventually, they closed down the orphanage and everyone left It was then that I realized it wasn't my fault.
